How to Remember What You Read Using Sticky-Note Flags
How often have you read a book from start to finish, only to discover that you havent retained very much of the information it contained? This can happen with any type of book. Literature, textbooks, or just-for-fun books can all contain information you really want or need to remember. There is good news. You can remember the important facts of a bookà by followingà a simple method. What You Need Book that is interesting or required readingColored sticky-note flags (small)Pencil with eraser (optional)Note cards Instructions Have sticky notes and a pencil on hand as you read. Try to get in the habit of keeping supplies on hand for this active reading technique.Stay alert for important or pivotal information. Learn to identify meaningful statements in your book. These are often statements that sum up a list, trend, or development in an assigned reading. In a piece of literature, this may be a statement that foreshadows an important event or a particularly beautiful use of language. After a little practice, these will start to jump out at you.Mark each important statement with a sticky flag. Place the flag in position to indicate the beginning of the statement. For instance, the sticky part of the flag can be used to underline the first word. The tail of the flag should stick out from the pages and show when the book is closed.Continue to mark passages throughout the book. Dont worry about ending up with too many flags. If you own the book, follow up with a pencil. You may want to use a very light pencil ma rk to underline certain words that you want to remember. This is helpful if you find that there are several important points on one page.Once you have finished reading, go back to your flags. Re-read each passage that you have marked. Youll find that you can do this in a matter of minutes.Make notes on a note card. Keep track of all your readings by creating a collection of note cards. These can be valuable at test time.Erase the pencil marks. Be sure to clean up your book and remove any pencil marks. Its okay to leave the sticky flags in. You may need them at finals time! Additional Tips In the course of reading a book, you may come across several noteworthy statements in each chapter or a single thesis statement in each chapter. It depends on the book.Avoid using a highlighter on a book. They are great for class notes, but they destroy the value of a book.Only use a pencil on books you own. Dont mark library books.Dont forget to use this method when reading literature from your college reading list.

Macbeth By William Shakespeare Essay Example For Students
Macbeth By William Shakespeare Essay In the play Macbeth by William Shakespeare, Lady Macbeth unconsciously uses Macbeth and others as a shield for guilt. When she wants something but doesnt have the guts to perform the task herself, she calls upon anyone but herself to do it. She thinks that this will erase her conscience of any guilt it has on it, but the shield is faulty. The first and most obvious of all places where this shield is placed is in the first two acts where Lady Macbeth is trying to convince her husband to kill King Duncan and become King of Scotland. She persuades by attacking Macbeths manliness,Was the hope drunkWherein you dressed yourself? Hath it slept since? And wakes it now, to look so green and paleAt what it did so freely? From this timeSuch I account thy love. Art thou afeardTo be the same in thine own act and valorAs thou art in desire? Wouldst thou have thatWhich thou esteemst the ornament of lifeAnd live a coward in thine own esteem,Letting ?I dare not wait upon ?I would,Like the poor cat I th adage?(I, vii, 39-49)By doing this, she manages to get Macbeth to kill King Duncan, however, in the end, she knows she is just as guilty as he is. Her guilt emerges in her visions of blood remaining on her hands,The Thane of Fife had a wife. Where isshe now? What, will these hands neer be clean? Nomore o that, my lord, no more o that. Yo u mar allwith this starting.(V, I, 44-47)Another less obvious place where Lady Macbeth uses others to shield her guilt is when Banquo is murdered. Both MacBeth and Lady MacBeth discuss their fear of Banquo knowing too much, and Lady MacBeth resolves to do nothing and leaves the chore up to her husband. After finding out about it, Lady MacBeth tells herself it wasnt her fault, but deep inside she knows it is just as much her as it is MacBeth who killed Banquo,Wash your hands. Put on your night-gown. Look not so pale. I tell you yet again, Ban-quos buried; he cannot come out on ?s grave.(V, I, 65-68)These examples show how Lady MacBeth used her husband to shield away the guilt. What she didnt expect was that it wouldnt work, and the blow of the guilt from murdering so many people strictly for power was too much for her weak shield. Emotionally she suffered and it drove her to talking her own life. She ineffectively tried to block off what was destined to come her way.

Subtle Characterization In A Good Man Is Hard To Find Essays
Subtle Characterization In A Good Man Is Hard To Find Throughout her short story ?A Good Man Is Hard to Find,? Flannery O'Connor uses subtle characterization to establish the characters of the Misfit and the Grandmother. While some of the characteristics in the story are straightforward and easily understood, others require one to look beneath the surface. Upon one's first reading of the story, he or she most likely believes that the Misfit is a dangerous, bad criminal, and the Grandmother just an old woman; but upon closer examination, it is obvious that, in fact, the Grandmother is the real villain of the story; while the Misfit is a man who feels he has a name to uphold and has learned many of life's lessons. First, the Grandmother introduces the Misfit early in the story when she states, ?That fellow that calls himself the Misfit is aloose from the Federal Pen?(352)?;?I wouldn't take my children in any direction with a criminal like that aloose in it (352).? Already, the reader is led to believe that the Misfit must indeed be an awful criminal. The Grandmother is also characterized early in the story. Her grandchildren state, ?She wouldn't stay at home for a million bucks. Afraid she'd miss something. She has to go everywhere we go (352).? It seems that early in the story that the Misfit is a bad man, while the Grandmother is just an old woman who enjoys spending time with her family. Next, although the Grandmother seems to be a sweet, old woman, there are several instances that point to the fact that she is manipulative and hypocritical. Di Renzo says in his book American Gargoyles that many critics have objections to A good man is hard to find because of O'Connor's elaborate comic depiction of the grandmother and her family. He goes on to say that because the family is so ludicrous, so irredeemably gauche and petty, that it would be impossible for the reader to sympathize with them, even when the misfit is massacring them. Also, while the family is in the car, the Grandmother tells June Star and John Wesley, ?In my time, children were more respectful of their native states and their parents and every thing else (353).? Then, as they pass by a Negro child, the Grandmother exclaims, ?Oh look at the cute little pickaninny! (353)? This instance proves that the Grandmother is a hypocrite. While trying to tell her grandchildren they should be more respectful as childr en in her time were, the Grandmother does the opposite. Second, The Grandmother knows how to manipulate people in order to flatter them to get what she wants. She tells the children about a mansion she had once visited only because she hopes they can talk their father into visiting it again so she can see it. Thus, it is very obvious that the Grandmother is an extremely self-absorbed, manipulative woman. Last, there is the characterization of the Misfit. Even though he is in fact a dangerous man, his is not really the life he wants to lead. The Misfit is a man who questions existence as well as the system. He states, ?Jesus was the only One that ever raised the dead. If he didn't, then it's nothing for you to do but enjoy the few minutes you got left the best way you can- by killing somebody or burning down his house or doing some other meanness to him (362).? Throughout the story, the Misfit never lies. He is full of respect, particularly for women. Ironically, although he is a criminal, the Misfit is also a kind, honest man. When the Family encounters The Misfit, communication is almost solely between The Misfit and the grandmother. They create dialogue between each other immediately after she realizes who he was. The grandmother shrieked, You're The Misfit!...I recognized you at once to which The Misfit replies, It would have been better for all you of you, lady, if you hadn't of reckernized me. Without regard for her family, the grandmother thinks first of herself, crying, You wouldn't shoot a lady, would you? As she converses with The Misfit, she learns of his decent parents and good up bringing, and can therefore categorize

Therefore skillful and appropriate use of the human resource is a major contributing factor to the success of an organization. Organizational requirements for successful Team Works For an organization to set the stage for a successful work teams, the organizational policies should have high profile projects. Projects are organized in phases, which are interrelated. The success of one phase depends to a greatest degree on the success of the previous phase. Each phase has its own key processes that require specialized skills and experiences of available work force. Each phase of the project requires a teamwork with functional responsibilities all geared towards the success of the entire project for the benefit of the organization. The requirement of teamwork in this perspective is to minimize the managerial burden since the teamwork is in collaboration with an overall objective. In such a situation, the organizational formal management would be expensive and teamwork renders the role as unwarranted. (Putz 2002) The different phases of the project facilitate for the development of individual particular expertise and a wide range of production areas shares the benefits of individual skill sand experiences. The players in the teamwork should be subjected to the advantage of work at a position where the level of skills and expertise best warrant for action with comfort and ease. (Katzenbach & Smith, 1993) The products and services of different organization are unique. It usually costs the organization, in terms of time and money, to build up the unique product and service. To prevail in the market, the exact replica of the organizations production output should persist. For the success of this, teamwork becomes further important. Quality standards should be maintained unless in a case where the organization aims at product development and/or improvement. A team of qualified personnel should handle each level of production chain. (Kotter 1996 & Fisher 1999) Another requirement for a successful work teams is the availability of an established human capital investment. The degree of competency and discipline will depend upon the success in remuneration of the work team and the fulfillment of the requirement for training if need arises. The fact that technology is advancing should not be ignored and it is the duty of the organization to cope with the changes through internships and regular training. Training should be accompanied by evaluation of the changes in the skill needs in the organization (Hogan 2003). The organizational requirement for precisely defined skills also calls of work teams. The degree of specialization to a specific production activity is best enhanced by the application of work teams. Some situations require problem solving teams and self-directed work groups to achieve a high quality management of production practices. If in case rotation of roles has to occur the organization should be capable to involve the work teams in a formal training to update the skills and expertise to cope up with production requirements. (Cooper, Lock 2000) The requirement of workforce diversity also calls for work teams. Work place diversity in terms of skills and experiences, demographics such as race, ethnicity, age, race and gender are positively productive to the organization. The work team as a whole would require the contribution of talents skills and experiences inherent in the diverse range of employees for the overall success of the organization. (Hackman 1990) The organizational requirement for work schedules also calls for work teams. Work schedule promotes the health and well being of the organization workers, and serves as a solution to psychological violence in the organization. (Streibel, Joiner, Scholtes 2003) The organizational requirements for new policies, which are original to the tradition of the organization, are also necessary for incorporation of work teams in the workplace. The policing becomes an achievable goal when individual potentials are tapped for a collective gain in the organization. The management role is further simplified since the teams are ideally self-managed and serves as employee investment groups. (Katzenbach & Willard 1995) Work schedules also help the organization to maximize the employees, the human resources, output by making efficient use of the other available resources. Time and other specific resources are utilized to their maximum potential for profitable production in an organization. (Chris 1998) Conclusion Work teams in any organization uplift the production standards and consolidate the managerial functions, of the organization. The organization policy goals are established with a little requirement for supervision. The role of the management is reduced to visionary policy making and the strategic planning for the benefit of the future operations of the organization. This is one of the best approaches to make the maximum use of human resources for the efficient use of the organization static resources. References Barbara J. Streibel, Brian L. Joiner, Peter R. Calling Calatravas work open and organic, the New York Times declared that the new terminal would evoke the kind of uplifting spirituality that is needed on Ground Zero. Santiago Calatrava is not without his critics. In the world of architecture, Calatrava is typecast as more of an arrogant engineer than a designer. The vision of his aesthetics is often not well-communicated, or perhaps is absent from his designs. More importantly, perhaps, is his well-known reputation of unsupervised workmanship and cost overruns. Many of his projects have ended up in various legal systems as expensive buildings seem to deteriorate quickly into disrepair. It is hard to find a Calatrava project that has not been significantly over budget, reports The New York Times. And complaints abound that he is indifferent to the needs of his clients. Rightfully or not, Calatrava has been placed in the starchitect category, with all of its associated back-biting and egotism. GP210 week 2 Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words
GP210 week 2 - Research Paper Example nalist views argue that a constitution does not evolve or change; therefore, it will always mean what it meant when it was adopted in a country (Exploring Constitutional Conflicts, 2012). With this view in mind, its interpretation must be in line with the thoughts that the people who came with it had in mind. These people also argue that originalism preserves the authority of the court which is a mandatory element in ensuring that there is the prevalence of justice in a country. Thus, this school of thought believes that the constitution must be interpreted with regard to the views of the original composers. On the other hand, those who oppose this viewpoint argue that no written constitution can anticipate the means that the government might use to oppress people; hence it is sometimes mandatory for judges to fill in the gaps that exist in the constitution through their interpretation (Exploring Constitutional Conflicts, 2012). With these view in mind, the constitution must be interpreted with the needs of the people it is supposed to govern in mind. In addition to this, non-originalism allows judges to rectify inflexible interpretations that no longer serve their original purposes (Whittington, 2001). The need to amend or possibly revoke bad laws that exist in the constitution will be realized with continual originalist interpretations. Other than leave courts to continuously find fault in the constitutional provisions, the people concerned will be obliged to come up with a new constitution that best suits the needs of people. However, coming up with a new constitution is a costly affair and this is the reason why non-original interpretations should be given way. Moreover, they will allow for more enlightened understanding on contemporary issues such as equal treatment of blacks, women and other minority groups (Whittington, 2001). With these views in place, it is clear that non-originalist interpretations of the constitution are more favorable. Apart from

Sufficiency Economy Philosophy organization Essay
Sufficiency Economy Philosophy organization - Essay Example It is now familiarly known as sufficiency economy principles. Sufficiency Economy principles that was promulgated and implemented by the King of Thailand is largely grounded on the principles of Buddhism which is likewise the major religion in the region (SufficiencyEconomy.org 2006; Leekpai 4). This ideology together with the commonly observed persistence of poverty generated a more fitted strategy of addressing such dilemma. Sufficiency economy as a long-term shot for a sustainable program is more like making choices in the midst of scarcity (Parkin 12). In which case, the citizens of Thailand were encouraged to accept trade-offs for the benefit of the majority, and to avoid the dangers of succumbing to times like the busted economy in 1997 to 1998 when real GDP growth was at negative 6.1 (-6.1), and Real GDP growth per capita was at negative seven point one (-7.1) (Warr 5). This particular situation is exactly in contrast to the economic boom enjoyed in the previous years. But, almost everyone knew that was hugely brought about by foreign i nvestment. In other words, when the investors departed, they left carrying along with them their capital plus profit, busting the economy of its capitalizations. Thus, it can be rationalized that the King's sufficiency economy theory is accurate. ... According to the author,"Positive growth was achieved in all subsequent years to 2003 (Phase IV), but an average rate of only 3.3 percent (1999 to 2003)" (Warr 5). The virtues of King Bhumibol Adulyadej's were of essence to the folks, business and emergent economies (Hewison v). It rest upon the conventional virtues of Buddhism's modest ways of living that emphasized the attitude of self-controlled expenditures, logical demeanor in living, self-preservation, and knowledge and righteousness, which lead to contentment, astuteness, serenity, and paradise. The Hidden Truth Behind Sweatshop Business in India Research Paper
The Hidden Truth Behind Sweatshop Business in India - Research Paper Example Gap which is a successful and high street brand which has sweatshop factories operating in India depicts the hidden truth and true prevailing conditions of the sweatshop business in India. Globalization has allowed multinational corporations to lower their costs by outsourcing as many functions as possible to low-wage countries (Ross 2010). It has also allowed these low-cost countries which are mostly located in Asia to attract these corporations for investment and employment. As long as these corporations bring in the required investment and provide for employment, the governments of these nations are willing to amend their laws for the benefit of these companies. One of the main reasons that these brands select a particular country for outsourcing is either because of favorable labor laws or an inefficient system for imposing these labor laws. In the case of China, the labor law bans trade unions and strikes which favor many companies. On the other hand, in the case of India an ine fficient system and corrupt law enforcement favors corporations to shift their production to benefit from child labor, low wages and exploitation of working conditions (Winston 2005, Ross 2010). The Indian government cannot afford to interfere with the operations of these multinational apparel brands since there is a chance that these companies may move their production to other competitive countries, like China, Cambodia, Bangladesh and Vietnam, where the laws and regulations are lax (Ross 2010). According to an estimate provided by United Nations, India employs around 55 million children, under the age of 14 years, and producing around 20% of Indiaââ¬â¢s GDP (Foster 2007). India, along with Bangladesh, China, Vietnam, and Indonesia, is part of a low-wage, Big Asia bloc exporters of apparels to the United States and Europe. These countries account for 55 percent of the U.S. import market, which amounts to 95 percent of the U.S. apparel market (Ross 2010). The increasing trend of customers demanding low-cost, high-quality apparel has forced large apparel brands to outsource their production facilities to low-cost countries to stay competitive in terms of pricing, without compromising on profits. Companies such as Gap, Nike, Marks & Spencer, Primark, Next, Mothercare and Wal-Mart have been found involved in the exploitation of the workforce (Mail Online 2007, Winston 2005, Chamberlain 2010). The management of these large brands lobbies with powerful economic and political forces of their nations to promote imports from lower-cost countries by lifting import quotas on apparel (Winston 2005). Large brands like Gap have been found exploiting the Indian workforce more than once. The first case of exploitation was discovered in 2007 after which Gap had promised to put in extra effort to rid their factories of forced labor and exploitation. In 2010, however, Gap was again found involved in child-labor and exploitation activities in India (Foster 2007, Chamberlain 2010). Exploitation of workforce is only possible when both parties in an employment contract agree to the wage levels and working conditions. It is important to appreciate that poverty in India is widespread. According to a study, almost half of all children in India are malnourished (Foster 2007). This extreme poverty forces parents, living in poor localities, to either sell their children to contractors for work, in return for a better life and

Impact of Brexit on the Tata Group
Impact of Brexit on the Tata Group INTRODUCTION The British individuals voted to leave the Europe Union, and the will of the general population ought to win. Be that as it may, the general population voted without learning of the genuine terms of Brexit. As these terms turn out to be clear, it is their entitlement to alter their opinion (Blair, T. (1996)). Brexit is a word that has turned out to be utilized as a shorthand method for saying the UK leaving the EU consolidating the words Britain and exit to get Brexit, similarly as a conceivable Greek exit from the euro was named Grexit before. A choice a vote in which everybody (or almost everybody) of voting age can partake was hung on Thursday 23 June, to choose whether the UK should leave or stay in the European Union. Leave won by 52% to 48%. The choice turnout was 71.8%, with more than 30 million individuals voting (Hunt, A., & Wheeler, B. (2017).). The monetary outcomes of leaving the EU will rely upon what arrangements the UK receives following Brexit. In any case, bring down exchange because of diminished coordination with EU nations is probably going to cost the UK economy significantly more than is picked up from bringing down commitments to the EU spending plan. the UK receives following Brexit. In any case, bring down exchange because of diminished coordination with EU nations is probably going to cost the UK economy significantly more than is picked up from bringing down commitments to the EU spending plan. Notwithstanding putting aside remote venture, relocation and the dynamic outcomes of lessened exchange, we assess the impacts of Brexit on exchange and the UKs commitment to the EU spending plan would be identical to a fall in the wage of in the vicinity of 1.3% and 2.6% (à £850 to à £1,700 per family unit every year). Whats more, once we incorporate the long-run impacts of Brexit on efficiency, the decrease in wage increments to in the vicinity of 6.3% and 9.5% (about à £4,200 to à £6,400 per family unit every year) (Dhingra, S., Ottaviano, G. I., Sampson, T., & Reenen, J. V. (2016).). In the extent of the World Trade Organization (WTO), of which the UK would be a basic part following situation 1 sort of EU-withdrawal, there are clear controls restricting the nation in its dealings with other exchanging accomplices. Favored exchanging conditions stood to one gathering must likewise be allowed to all others, with exemptions for creating nations, local unhindered commerce territories and traditions unions. Under WTO administers, a benefit conceded by one gathering just reaches out to different states who respond that benefit, while in a multilateral equal relationship a similar inclination would be stretched out to the gathering that arranged a specific benefit. The separation consent to be consulted between the EU and UK could confine the breathing space accessible to London when offering exchange inclinations ââ¬â with questionable outcomes for creating economies. Whats more, such WTO renegotiations are exceptionally intricate and include an extensive number of different on-screen characters. The prerequisite for unanimity of every one of the 164 WTO individuals could bring about different positions and claims being put on the table, which would involve a protracted procedure (Henà ¶kl, T. (2017).) Tata is one of the worlds most trusted gatherings has more than 100 years of quality in a worldwide economy with a very much broadened business. Tataââ¬â¢s esteem framework incorporates five centre esteems ââ¬â respectability, understanding, magnificence, solidarity and duty and worldwide moral principles which have constantly bolstered its business execution. Tata acquires the social responsibility which has come about in extraordinary trust and certainty of its partners. The organization began in 1907 in Europe, now has developed to 19 organizations with a 60000 workforce. Tata has world eminent brands in Europe, similar to Land Rover, Jaguar, Tetley, Tata Steel, TCS and so forth. Tata remains for its name and its notoriety and the trust. They put stock in Leadership with Trust. Tata has been the most trusted brand in India for a long time. Their straightforward approaches and moral standards, reasonable exchange rehearses have created elevated requirements of corporate admi nistration(Kumar, S. H. (2017)). TRADE INTEGRATION Trade integration is the unification of monetary strategies between various states through the incomplete or full cancelation of tax and non-tax confinements on exchange occurring among them before their incorporation. This is implied thusly to prompt lower costs for merchants and purchasers with the objective of expanding the level of welfare, while prompting an expansion of financial profitability of the states. The change economies of Central and Eastern Europe have encountered since the mid-1990s quick exchange mix into world markets, especially with the more develop economies of Western Europe. Taken as a total, they now speak to the euro territorys third-biggest exchanging accomplice(Bussià ¨re, M., Fidrmuc, J., & Schnatz, B. (2005)). The European Union (EU) is the UKs biggest exchange accomplice. Around a half of the UKs exchange is with the EU. EU participation diminishes exchange costs between the UK and the EU. This makes products and enterprises less expensive for UK customers and enables UK organizations to trade more. Leaving the EU (Brexit) would bring down exchange between the UK and the EU in view of higher tax and non-levy hindrances to exchange. Likewise, the UK would profit less from future market incorporation inside the EU. The fundamental financial advantage of leaving the EU would be a lower net commitment to the EU spending plan. All EU nations lose salary after Brexit. The general GDP fall in the UK is à £26 billion to à £55 billion, about twice as large as the à £12 billion to à £28 billion salary misfortune in the rest of the EU consolidated. Non-EU nations encounter some littler pay picks up. If the UK singularly expelled every one of its taxes on imports from whatever is left of the world after Brexit, UK livelihoods fall by 1% in the hopeful case and 2.3% in the skeptical case. In the long run, lessened exchange brings down efficiency. Figuring in these impacts significantly builds the expenses of Brexit to lost 6.3% to 9.5% of GDP (about à £4,200 to à £6,400 per family). Being outside the EU implies that the UK would not consequently profit by future EU exchange manages different nations. This would mean passing up a great opportunity for the present US and Japanese arrangements, which are estimate to enhance genuine wages by 0.6%. After Brexit, would the UK get better exchange manages non-EU nations? It would not need to trade off such a great amount with other EU states, however the UK would lose haggling control as its economy makes up just 18% of the EUs single market. It is indistinct whether there are generous administrative advantages from Brexit. The UK as of now has one of the OECDs slightest controlled item and work markets. First-class reserve funds are as far as anyone knows from cancelation of the Renewable Energy Strategy and the Working Time Order ââ¬â both of which get impressive household political help in the UK (Dhingra, S., Ottaviano, G. I., Sampson, T., & Reenen, J. V. (2016)) While the total monetary effect of such a situation has been explored the wide variety in duty rates, and thus heterogeneity in sectoral and nation level effects, has not been already considered. Taking the 5200 items recorded in the EU outside duty plan and applying them symmetrically to EU-UK expos viable tax rates going from 2% to 11% by the nation. Over areas, the variety is more emotional, extending from 0% to half mirroring the distinctions in items exchanged. Joining these tax prompted cost increments with versatility reaction gauges, we figure the aggregate impact on the exchange by the nation. The EUs fares to the UK would fall by 30% speaking to a 2% decrease in its aggregate world exchange. Ireland and Belgium would be the most uncovered, losing 4% and 3.1% of their aggregate fares individually, though a few nations, for example, Estonia and Finland would see decreases in their aggregate exchange of under 0.3%. The UKs fares to the EU would fall by 22% however as these decreases apply to 27 exchanging accomplices, the total impact is bigger than that of the EU with the UK confronting a fall in its aggregate exchange of 9.8%. Exchange some particular areas, for example, sustenance and materials would be near wiped out while others would be practically unaffected. The seriousness of the effect is subsequently determined basically by the item structure of current exchange streams between the UK and every individual EU part. As a last note on contemplations that are past the extent of this paper; we look at particularly the effect of WTO duties on UK-EU exchange, however, keep up the suspicion that the UK remains an individual from the traditions union with the EU. This implies we dont analyze the effect of any potential changes in duties that the UK may apply to different nations in case of not anymore being fixing to the normal outer levy it as of now applies as an EU part. A choice by the UK to digress from the basic outer duty implies expelling itself from the EU traditions union which thus implies that traditions checks and documentation to conform to tenets of cause would need to be executed with a specific end goal to keep third nations from traveling merchandise through the UK to maintain a strategic distance from higher EU taxes (Sapir, 2016). This illustration features facilitate the extremely wide scope of channels through which choices on the way of Brexit could affect on European and British as well as world exchange streams(Lawless, M., & Morgenroth, E. (2016)). Since the opening of the Indian economy in 1991, Tata has been liable to the worldwide rivalry, making it basic for the gathering to end up plainly aggressive in India against the new participants. To pick upscale, lessen their presentation to the cyclicality of Indias economy, survive, and accomplish a feasible focused position in enterprises that are globalizing, most Tata organizations at that point looked abroad. Tatas current experience is a magnificent case for examining quickened internationalization (Matthews 2002). In accordance with a challenger combination from in the past fringe regions that goes global with a specific end goal to get to assets, the Tata bunch has been driven by various elements, including the need to get to new markets (e.g., in BPOadministrations), the chance to incorporate the esteem chain (e.g., in steel), and the journey for mark control (e.g., in tea). This procedure demonstrated plausible in light of the fact that Tata has solid administration joined with vision; can misuse the likelihood of utilizing progressively created money related markets in India, an expansive household showcase, and worldwide liquidity; and responded quickly to the opening of particular openings at given circumstances(Goldstein, A. (2008)) .Brexit could hit Tata Group stocks hard. Top gathering organizations ââ¬â Tata Motors, Tata Steel, Tata Elxsi, Tata Global Beverage and which together are 83% of the aggregate market capitalization of the Tata Group organizations ââ¬â have critical presentation to the UK and Europe markets and the weaker monetary forms there may negatively affect their market capitalizations. ECONOMIC MODELS As an individual from the EU, the UK has been incorporated into exchange bargains the EU has arranged. There are 22 exchange assertions between the EU and individual nations, and five multi-sidelong understandings covering various nations. This implies if the UK needs to hold special access to the business sectors of the 52 nations secured by these assertions, it would need to renegotiate exchange manages every one of them. England is a vast market, so there is a reasonable motivator for different nations to arrange an arrangement. Backers of Brexit contended that it would be to no ones greatest advantage to interfere with the present exchanging associations. Lets discuss the possible economic models between UK and EU after Brexit The Norway Model Individual from European Economic Area, full access to single market, obliged to make a money related commitment and acknowledge dominant part of EU laws, free development applies as it does in the EU Norway is an individual from the European Economic Area (EEA) the single market alongside the 28 current EU individuals, Liechtenstein and Iceland. the European Economic Area (Norway display). This would limit the exchange expenses of Brexit, yet it would mean paying around 83% of what the UK is as of now adding to the EU. It would likewise require keeping momentum directions (without sitting down at the table when the principles are chosen). Another choice is arranging reciprocal manages the EU (Switzerland show). Switzerland still faces control without portrayal and pays around 40% as much as the UK to be a piece of the single market in products. Be that as it may, the Swiss have no concurrence with the EU on unhindered commerce in the administrations business, a zone where the UK is a noteworthy exporter (Ryan, J. (2016)). Norwegian financial services have passport rights, so a similar model for the UK would be the least disruptive for the City. Of course, this deal involves contributions to the EU budget and free movement of labour, which would seem be part of the major objections to EU membership. Hence it is not clear it will be either offered, or would be accepted by the UK (McMahon, M. (2016)). The Switzerland Model In assessing the EU-Swiss game plans as a conceivable model for the UKs future association with the EU, there are two angles to remember: right off the bat, how the current EU-Swiss relationship created as an arrangement of particular understandings, following its choice of 1992, which rejected approval of its arranged consideration in the EEA, and besides how it has taken care of the free development of people. Swiss model of various concurrences with the EU. Following its 1992 submission that rejected increase to the EEA, Switzerland and the EU went into a long and complex procedure of arranging numerous segment particular understandings, which had the impact of reconstituting a great part of the substance of the EEA assertion. These were consulted over numerous years and were gathered into progressive bundles. For the first and primary bundle embraced in 1999, the EU demanded that inability to execute any single understanding would prompt programmed suspension of alternate parts of the bundle. This was planned to guarantee a comprehensive nature of the entire relationship, since the EU is completely disinclined to carefully choosing just those components of the framework that the accomplice state likes. This is the reason the EU has turned out to be exceptionally reproachful of the present state of affairs administration with Switzerland, and will most likely be opposed to enable the UK to arrange something comparable. The selectivity and saw adaptability of the Swiss model are reasons why it has been pushed as a model for the UK. In any case, the UK ought to have no fantasies about the probability that the EU would locate this satisfactory. The EU will without a doubt demand a solitary and exhaustive understanding for its future association with the UK. In general the old Swiss model can be avoided, while the conditions for another Swiss model have been set out expressly by the EU Council, which appear to all the more firmly estimated the EEA show. Switzerland and the free development of people. A moment and more significant part of the Swiss experience concerns the free development of individuals. Switzerland concurred in 1999 to the free development of individuals, subject however to a protect statement, which gave that: in case of genuine monetary or social challenges, the Joint Committee should meet, at the demand of either Contracting Party, to inspect proper measures to cure the circumstance. The extension and length of such measures should not surpass what is entirely important to cure the circumstance. Inclination should be given to measures that slightest disturb the working of this Agreement. This proviso has never been initiated, be that as it may, thus there is no involvement with how it may have been connected. In February 2014, it was regardless overwhelmed politically by a submission that was passed by a restricted lions share of 50.3% against Mass Immigration, successfully requiring the administration to set up inside three years an arrangement of quantitative cutoff points to movement from all sources, including the EU. This was against a foundation of outsiders having ascended to represent23.4% of the populace, with around 1.3 million from the EU (which is a few times higher on a for each capita premise than movement from the EU into the UK). Given that the Swiss government was obliged under its own particular law to embrace executing enactment no later than three years after the submission, i.e. by February 2017, it proposed inMarch 2016 new enactment to oversee migration for the EU in the accompanying terms: The proposed one-sided shield statement accommodates yearly points of confinement to be set by the government chamber on the quantity of licenses issued to individuals from EU and EFTA nations movement surpasses a specific limit. When setting these limits the Federal Council will consider Switzerlands general monetary interests as stipulated in the FederalConstitution, and think about the suggestions of a recently settled migration commission.3 Attempts to achieve a concurrence with this proposition with the EU flopped, be that as it may, and the proposed charge never go into law. All the more as of late, the Swiss parliaments lower house received on 21 September 2016 another law favoring the enlistment of neighborhood inhabitants for new opening, including effectively settled EU occupants, with an end goal to achieve a trade off arrangement with the EU. The Swiss trust this ought to be adequate to the EU and that the submission of 2014 will now be surpassed by this law if go by the upper house. European Commission President, Jean-Claude Juncker, has said that in his view the EU could be happy with this new law. At long last, in a further contort to this Swiss issue, a request of is being flowed to hold a moment choice to revoke the one of February 2014, and it has evidently as of now increased 100,000 supporters. While this number is adequate to legitimize requiring another choice, it stays to be seen whether the appeal to is currently dropped in perspective of the new law.The new law gives off an impression of being a delicate measure went for completion the encounter with the EU.After two or three years of reflection, the Swiss appear to have passed judgement on it to be to their greatest advantage to make a concession as opposed to give the 2014 submission a chance to cause real harm on their economy. This may not take care of the British issue, but rather as a contextual investigation in Swiss administration of the choice procedure, it gives the UK something to think about (Emerson, M. (2016)). Turkey Model This model would mean holding the EUs regular outside levy (as bound at the WTO as its MFN tax plan) and furthermore the import conditions forced under the EUs some free exchange or special exchange understandings. The huge favorable position is that fares pass unreservedly into the EU without being liable to traditions controls or authoritatively exorbitant guidelines of-origindocumentation. As respects the EUs unhindered commerce or particular concurrences with whatever remains of the world, the UK would need to arrange reciprocally with these nations so as to increase special access to their business sectors, however, as a rule, it would be conceivable for the UK to secure an indistinguishable particular terms from the EU, despite the fact that this would not be programmed. While the UK would not be allowed to do facilitated commerce manages different nations in front of the EU, it is outstanding that the EU has progressing arrangements with significant exchanging countries, including the US, Japan, and India. As and when these arrangements result in new facilitated commerce understandings for the EU, at that point the UK ought to on a fundamental level have the capacity to finish on similar terms. In addition, some of these nations, including theUS, say that regardless, the UK (outside the Customs Union) would be at the back of the line. Remaining in the traditions union would likewise have the critical political preferred standpoint of staying away from a restoration of custom controls at the Northern Ireland/Ireland wilderness. Cancelation of those boondocks controls was one of the flag accomplishments of the Good Friday Agreement of 1998, which finished 30 years of the brutal clash. No one needs to destabilize that understanding. Most would agree that both the EU and Turkey observe the Customs Union to be an awkward course of action, in view of the limitations forced alone exchange arrangement and coming about pressures. It is significant that Turkey looked for yet was rejected cooperation in the EU arrangements with the US over the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP).Nevertheless, the Customs Union alternative for the UK would have the colossal value of being a considerably less complex course to maintain unhindered commerce for products than alternate models portrayed in this paper. An inquiry would emerge over related conditions that the EU side would require, past consistency with the traditions code and methodology(Emerson, M. (2016). Which model for Brexit?.) The CETA with Canada This new concurrence with Canada is a model of a Comprehensive FTA with a progressed modern economy outside Europe. It is a later and created show than for instance that with Korea and appears to be viewed as now as a reason for modernizing various other more seasoned FTAs, for example, with Mexico. CETA accommodates essential levy free FTA conditions. For administrations, the CETA goes significantly past WTO-GATS arrangements (versatility of specialists, shared acknowledgment of experts, an expulsion of a few confinements in money related and oceanic transport administrations, open acquirement). It is additionally very radical in opening open obtainment markets. In the field of specialized guidelines and controls, the key dialect in Article 4.4 is: the gatherings attempt to collaborate to the degree conceivable, to guarantee that their specialized directions are perfect with each other, with arrangements for acknowledgment of comparability where one gathering judges that its standard is identical to that of the other party. Be that as it may, this isnt programmed and must be conceded to an item by item. There is a concession to similarity appraisal, with the end goal that a capable body in the EU can test items for fare to the Canadian market as indicated by Canadian guidelines and the other way around. For sterile and phytosanitary directions (SPS), Article 5.6 gives that The bringing in the party might acknowledge the SPS measure of the sending out Party as identical to its own if the trading Party equitably shows to the bringing in Party that its measure accomplishes the bringing in Partys fitting level of SPS insurance. The primary purpose of correlation with alternate models referred to is that the CETA goes generously past a basic FTA, yet keeps away from any responsibilities by Canada to estimated EU legislation(or the other way around), and leaves a significant part of the facilitating of market access to future procedures of a transaction. CETA is, in this way, less profound, legitimately authoritative and sure that the DCFTA (see advance underneath). Common acknowledgment in the territory of specialized directions is conceivable, yet not programmed. Albeit much talked about in the UK banter about, it was not specified by the Prime Minister in her 17 January discourse in light of current circumstances: the UK will hold all EU advertise law on Day 1 of withdrawal, and without a doubt proceed with consistency with much such law to guarantee great access to the EU showcase (Emerson, M., Busse, M., Di Salvo, M., Gros, D., & Pelkmans, J. (2017)). WTO (World Trade Organisations) This is the cleanest break choice, in that EU free development of individual principles would stop to apply. Some arrangement of work grants/visas would be set up for non-UK natives; obviously, different states (and the EU) would set up complementary (or retaliatory) measures. It would be dubious, in this example, to keep up free development of administrations, as this is personally connected with the free development of people. Besides, UK natives in other EU nations would turn out to be third-nation nationals (Doherty, M. (2016)). The Norway model where the UK joins the European Economic Area (EEA) The Switzerland model where the UK arranges an arrangement of two-sided concurrences with EU27 with respect to and factor streams The Turkey model where the UK goes into a traditions union with EU27 WTO situation where the UK exchanges with EU27 (and all other WTO individuals) on MFN terms(Yu, W., Elleby, C., Lind, K. M., & Thomsen, M. N. (2017)). OPPORTUNITIES AND THREATS FACED BY TATA GROUP OF COMPANY BY BREXIT The Tata Group has been in the focal point of news in the course of the most recent few days after it declared plans to leave its UK steel operations. The Indian aggregates UK nearness in steel making was built up in 2006 with the obtaining of the Corus Group, a London headquartered steelmaker with essential operations over the UK and the Netherlands. The Corus Group was renamed Tata Steel Europe. This isnt the main brand the Tata Group has in the UK. Alternate brands it possesses incorporate, Tetley, Jaguar Land Rover, St James Court, Taj 51 Suites and Residences, Bombay Brasserie and Quilon. As Britain natives voted and selected to leave the European Union, the Tata gathering is investigating its UK approach as spooked monetary experts sold offers of its associations. Tata Consultancy Services Ltd (TCS), Tata Motors Ltd and Tata Steel Ltd., are the primary Tata associations that have a basic prologue to Europe, especially the UK. The consequence of the British accommodation created for an exit plan from the EU, offers of each of the three associations dove. TCS fell as much as 4.8% to Rs.2517.10, Tata Motors dropped 12.9%, its steepest fall since 4 September 2009, to Rs.425 and Tata Steel pulled back 10.9% to Rs.297.40. They pared a segment of the adversities, with TCS completing 2.78% lower at Rs. 2,570.70, Tata Motors closing 7.99% down at Rs.449.00 and Tata Steel pulling back 6.37% to Rs.312.50. Each association always reviews its technique and operations in the light of headways, and will continue doing as such. Access to business divisions and to a skilled workforce will remain basic considerations. The Brexit will put Jaguar Land Rover in a perfect condition; Jaguar Land Rover exchanges 80% of its total creation and imports around 30% of the parts it requires. A weaker British pound (GBP) will thump up the associations charge recognize and balance the swelling in its import charge. A fragile GBP could influence the vehicle maker to cost engaged and profitable in a vast bit of the business segments it charges to, including China, which is essential both to the extent benefit and volumes. The impact on Jaguar Land Rovers business (if we markdown an incite conclusion driven impact on the economies) is no under two years away. In addition, the associations proposed creating unit in Slovakia will fence it against Brexit. JLR has assented to a game plan with the Slovakian government to collect another plant with a basic farthest point of 150,000 units. Advancement will start in 2016 and age in 2018. Panther Land Rover is putting à £1 billion in the plant. Esteem markets and fiscal norms around the world felt the tremors from Brexit. Tata Steel is set to stop finish off of its UK steelworks while it assesses the repercussions of the Brexit vote. The Mumbai-headquartered steel creature had revealed courses of action to offer its Port Talbot steelworks in Wales earlier this year. In any case, the move has been put on ice as it overviews the repercussions of the Brexit vote. The Indian mammoth will stop the arrangement amidst powerlessness over the impact of the decision to leave the EU. The heap up is yet to settle on a formal decision yet is under less weight to offer after a jump in steel costs, which has cut mishaps at the South Wales site. The association will obviously back off the trading to foresee the consequence of a UK government game plan to cut its 14 billion pound annuity liabilities and furthermore talks on EU trade deals. The decision may come as a hit to bidders, including the Indian-source businessman. Goodbye Group had, starting at now, been slanting towards holding the plant before the Brexit decision. Potential buyers of Tata Steel UK have conveyed alert about seven days priors vote for Britain to leave the EU, advised that Brexit could make the hardship making operation even less sensible. Rescue tries for the steel business in Port Talbot have been able to be covered in Brexit worries, with Tata Steel pulling indeed from an offer of its plant while it works out the repercussions of the UK leaving the European Union. Tata Steel, which has no under two offers and an organization buyout intend to consider for the site in south Wales, is thought to have halted the technique to consider the possible destiny of EU trade deals, and the liabilities in the social events à £14bn annuity design. Tata, underweight from an overall thrashing in steel costs as Chinas import asks for dwindled, sold off its long-things business in Europe to Greybull Capital and has been searching for a buyer for whatever is left of its UK operations. Tata Group lost around 30,000 crores as offers of a couple of reinforcements, including Tata Steel and Tata Motors, fell after UKs decision to leave the European Union. Goodbye Group works for 19 associations in the UK, using more than 60,000 people. It had earned 13.4% of its pay from the UK and over 12% from whatever is left of Europe in FY15. As steel try continues timing mishaps signifying $1.33 million daily, the Brexit choice now stands to undermine Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) Automobile a 1-billion-pound setback a year. JLR, money turning Tata concern, is depended upon to endure a shot from its toll to other European nations(Kumar, S. H. (2017)). STRATEGY TO EXPLOIT POTENTIAL OPPURTUNITIES AND AVERT THREATS A post-Brexit Britain that follows up on the dangers issued by Hammond and May will be a England avoided from the monetary advantages of the exchange merchandise and ventures with EU part states, and a Britain confronting the decay of what is (wrongly) viewed as the goose that lays the brilliant eggs, the City of London. Brexiteers longing for battling back with low wages, light controls, and forceful assessment strategies are envisioning that these advantages can be substituted by corporate and tip top riches streams. Despite the way that riches streams all by themselves will be inadequate to push a noteworthy political economy and the welfare and business prerequisites orderly to that, this is a formula for a long-haul decrease. Riches streams are by nature flighty and a Britain viably prohibited from its mammoth neighbouring business sector will improbable stay appealing. Vast global banks are now moving staff to Ireland and Luxembourg to catch the European market that will be lost to British business. Londons monetary prominence draws on worldwide expert administrations firms, law offices, and bookkeeping and tax assessment masters. This abilities nexus may, thus, wind up plainly delicate and input into a disappointed arrangement. Such a result will change how GWCs(global wealth chain) verbalized by means of the City are shaped, evolving into an ever-increasing number of forceful types of assessment arranging that are hidden in legitimate indeterminacy. Should that be the situation, we will require some logical devices to deal with this change Britain and Europe wander by they way they treat corporate shape. GWCs give productive methods for incorporating how we comprehend the law, bookkeeping, fund, and administrative changes as a framework. Brexit may think the reliance of London-construct elites in light of these frameworks much more. Knowing how to unbundle and dissect these systems turns out to be more critical, as relations between providers, customers, and controllers keep on morphing under the power of intervention, innovation, and political (mal)intent (Seabrooke, L., & Wigan, D. (2017)). Now lets discuss some strategies to overcome the threats faced by companies like TATA group: Dispense with vulnerability over exchange position at the earliest opportunity Make the greater part of chances to trade and re-establish segments supply Boost capital remittances instead of general slice to company tax? Re-boot modern approach and subsidizing: More to modify inventory network, Aptitudes ââ¬â devolution to districts (Bailey, D. (2017)). As TATA group of companies has a substantial acquaintance to Europe specifically UK. Access to business sectors and to a gifted workforce should stay imperative contemplations. Tata Steel in March declared its choice to close Tata Steel UK operations. At the season of the declaration, the organization said it had in regards to 7 million tons of steel-production limit in the UK alone. EU is a noteworthy market for Tata Steel UK.to know the effect on Tata Steel UK operation, It will rely upon the exchange arrangements between the UK and the rest of the nations in the European Union. Also, if Britain influences its own particular laws as far as universal to exchange, it will hope to help its household steel industry. A weaker British pound (GBP) will knock up the organizations fare acknowledge and balance the swelling in its import charge. A powerless GBP could influence the automaker to cost focused and productive in a large portion of the business sectors it fares to, including China, which is basic both as far as gainfulness and volumes. CONCLUSION After the British choice to leave the EU, Europes direction, even its predetermination, has again turned into a matter of decision. In an undeniably unstable world, neither the EU nor the UK has an enthusiasm for a separation that reduces their impact as the adjust of financial power moves far from the North-Atlantic world. We propose another type of cooperation, a mainland association. The UK will need to have some control over work portability, too as abandoning the EUs supranational basic leadership. The proposed mainland organization would comprise in partaking in products, administrations, capital versatility and a few impermanent work portability and also in another arrangement of between legislative basic leadership furthermore, the requirement of regular standards to ensure the homogeneity of the profoundly coordinated advertise. The UK would have a say on EU strategies however a definitive formal expert would stay with the EU. This outcome in a Europe with an internal circle, the EU, with profound and political joining, and an external hover with less coordination. As time goes on, this could likewise fill in as a dream for organizing relations with Turkey, Ukraine, and different nations. Tata group of companies one of the main steel exporting company in UK as well as it has more than 19 other companies established in UK including jaguar, land rover etc. Brexit consequences for associations will be guided by how the UK organizes with the EU on development laws and exchange. Nineteen free Tata associations have a proximity in the UK, with various organizations Tata Motors and Tata Steel are two associations with vital wage introduction to Europe, especially the UK.there is a chance to drop down the business but using strategies like general reduce in company tax as well as improvising the business method can help back to get into the business. Every one of the five of the well-known models have their qualities, yet each experiences some imperfection for the UK, which approves the no off-the-rack demonstrate comment of the Prime Minister. Simple WTO enrolment would mean genuine harm to access to the EU showcase for the two merchandise and enterprises; the EEA administration is contrary with the desire to control movement; remaining in the Customs Union would restrict the potential outcomes to lead organized commerce with whatever is left of the world; the Swiss model would not be worthy for the EU; and the Canadian model isnt generally pertinent for a future UK-EU exchange bargain, however more for third-nation cases. There is another 6th model for the Association Agreement with neighbouring nations, including the DFT equation for exchange. This model is additionally not appropriate for discount duplicating, but rather it offers a few highlights of potential enthusiasm to the UK: a structure to outline the imminent UK-EU transactions, a high level of single-showcase incorporation for three of the four flexibilities (merchandise, administrations, capital, however not work), and other legitimate and institutional highlights that the UK would discover not unseemly. Is College Worth it Essay
ââ¬Å"What is a College Degree Worth? â⬠by Maggie Gallagher. The overall main idea of this article is that the cost of college is going up and people is taking loans out which are putting them in debt because they have to pay them off. That is the reason why some people donââ¬â¢t go to college, I believe the author wrote the article to inform you about why teens are in debt after they graduate college. According to Mrs. Gallagher the main reason why college debt is increasing isà because loans are available and teenagers are encouraged to borrow money. At least 700 colleges have contract with bad banks to market credit cards to students. About nine in 10 students use credit cards to help pay for their college expenses. The main reason why the increase in college debt is because colleges have taught teenagers bad financial decisions, which has caused the decrease in the worth of a college degrees. The degree Iââ¬â¢m pursuing at this moment is my Bachelorââ¬â¢s degree in Culinary Arts. I want a better education other than a high school diploma. Me wanting to become a chef/ Pastry chef, there is nothing Flint nor Michigan for my degree. I want to be up there with the people on the Food network channel and the TLC channel as well. With me having more degrees it will most likely guarantee me a VERY nice job in the near future.

Health Psychology: Stress and Well Being
Health Psychology: Stress and Well Being Shavonia Finley PSY 101: Introduction to Psychology Destiny Champion February 14, 2011 Health Psychology: Stress and Well Being In everyoneââ¬â¢s life a little stress must fall. We all have to deal with daily hassles and various personal stressors that effect our emotional and physical health. The manner in which we deal with these stressors can alleviate or reduce stress or it can make things worse. Mind and body issues have bemused philosophers and psychologists since the ancient Greeks; however recently a new subfield in psychology has immerged to investigate the subject. Health psychology focuses on psychological factors and how they relate to wellness and illness. This would include prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of various medical ailments. More specifically, psychoneuroimmunology is a growing field dedicated to examining how psychological factors, the immune system, and the brain work together. For most people life is filled with small hassles that recur on a regular basis. Busy schedules at home and at work coupled with a traffic filled commute before your day even gets going can cause stress. These stressors are known as background stressors and are the most easily dealt with. They are the daily hassles that irritate us, do not require much coping, and are soon forgotten. Other background stressors can be classified as long term, chronic problems. Dissatisfaction with work, a relationship that is not fulfilling, or a culmination of minor stressors can manifest into health problems such as psychological symptoms, backaches, sore throat, or even the flu [ (Feldman, 2009) ]. The opposite of the daily hassle is uplifts. These are those positive little things that make us feel good. Uplifts are usually temporary, but when we experience more uplifts than stressors we experience less psychological symptoms. An example of an uplift might be something like getting a compliment or completing a task. Stressors such as the terrorist attack in 2001 or Hurricane Katrina in 2005 are classified as cataclysmic events. Cataclysmic events are experienced by many people at once and usually do not have potent, lingering effects. Social support is abundant because so many people share the same first-hand account of the event and can understand each otherââ¬â¢s feelings. Another major category of stressors is personal stressors. This would be brought on by things that are more personal such as the loss of a job or the death of a loved one. These types of stressors yield an immediate response that tapers over time allowing us to better cope. How we initially react to a stressor shows that there is a direct link between our mental and physical functions. Walter Cannonââ¬â¢s research in biological psychology, early in the 20th century, led him to describe the ââ¬Å"fight or flightâ⬠response of the sympathetic nervous system to perceived threats to physical or emotional security (Feldman, 2009). The body reacts with an increase in heart rate and blood pressure, increase in perspiration, hearing and vision become more acute, and the hands and feet become cold due to blood being directed to large muscles in preparation for fight or fleeing. Hans Selye took this a little further and popularized the concept of stress in the 1950ââ¬â¢s. His theory, which he called general adaption syndrome, suggests all individuals have the same or similar response to threatening situations. He believed that not only did the sympathetic nervous system respond, but also the adrenal cortex and the pituitary gland. The theory is that enough epinephrine, or adrenaline, is produced to focus the body on immediate self preservation and shut down other functions such as digestion, reproduction, tissue repair, and the immune system. A constant threat or stressor would leave these functions inhibited and cause the individual to be susceptible to illness (Richmond, 1997). This inhibition of bodily functions can also exacerbate an existing illness. There are three stages; alarm and mobilization when the stressor is realized, resistance or the attempt to cope, and if coping was not adequate, exhaustion and the onset of negative consequences. One example of how stress can leave someone vulnerable to illness is clear when we look at the case of an adolescent girl named Tatiana. Tatiana has had to take on parental responsibilities for her little sister for the past several years, giving up all social time with her friends to do so. She has also had knowledge of the financial difficulties her parents have had to deal with recently. To make matters worse, she has had to move from her home, just as she is starting middle school, to a whole new state. Recently she presented with severe abdominal pains from constipation. None of the over-the-counter remedies helped and she was admitted to the hospital. She was diagnosed with a virus that paralyzed her intestines so the doctor gave her antibiotics and a special diet to follow. Unfortunately, her condition continued to decline and the doctors decided her symptoms were psychosomatic, implying her illness was not real. She eventually lost all muscle function in her arms and legs and was confined to a wheelchair. She then was enrolled in a program run by a health psychologist designed to treat psychophysiological disorders. Since her physical ailments were already being treated by a pediatrician they could concentrate on the psychological and emotional difficulties and how they all interacted. After two months in the program, Tatiana is now able to walk on her own and is no longer having digestive difficulties. As she has stated, ââ¬Å"I was very angry with my parents. They never asked me what I wanted. They treat me like a baby, but they want me to do grown-up stuff. I hated them for thatâ⬠(Wells, 2011). While Selyeââ¬â¢s theory has impacted our understanding of stress, it has also been challenged. His theory suggests that no matter what the stressor, the biological reaction will be similar in all individuals. Health psychologists today believe the reaction is also determined by how the individual appraises the situation or stressor. For example, another adolescent in Tatianaââ¬â¢s situation may simply have acted out instead of becoming ill. The situation could have been perceived by another as stressful, but not unusual, therefore the different perception would result in a different outcome. Due to these differences in perspective, there has been an increased focus on psychoneuroimmunology and stress. Psychoneuroimmunology takes a broader approach to stress. It focuses more directly on the outcomes of stress; three main consequences have been identified. First, the physiological results of stress include increased blood pressure, hormonal activity, and an overall decline in the effectiveness of the immune system. Second, stress can cause people to behave in ways that are not productive and even harmful such as drug, alcohol, or nicotine use, poor eating habits, and a decrease in sleep. Third, indirect consequences that can cause a decline in health and the likelihood that medical advice will be ignored if ever sought. One of the biggest illnesses associated with stress is coronary heart disease. You may know someone who is always in competition with others, is easily irritated, or is overly aggressive. We all feel this way sometimes, but there are those who carry the set of personality traits know as the Type-A behavior pattern. Then there are those who fall into Type-B behavior pattern which is more patient, noncompetitive, nonaggressive, and cooperative. These two behavior types are the polar ends of a continuum and most people fall somewhere in the middle. Type-A personalities in males are highly associated with coronary heart disease. Hostility seems to be a key factor since it triggers the production of epinephrine and norepinephrine, increases heart rate, and raises blood pressure. When this response is exaggerated and continuous there is an increased incidence of coronary heart disease (Feldman, 2009). For most of society stress has been recognized as a part of life. Therefore people have devised many ways to control, reduce or tolerate it. These methods are known as coping and are often utilized in multiples. The most common methods of coping with stress are emotion-focused and problem-focused. Emotion-focused coping focuses on people trying to change the way they feel about or perceive a problem; like looking on the bright side. Problem-focused coping strategies include modification of the source of the stress; an example would be learning how to fix your own car to maintain and avoid costly repairs. Common coping methods vary widely in individuals. Most will choose healthy resolutions such as relaxation techniques to slow down the sympathetic nervous system. These include exercise, meditation, prayer, joining a support group, or any other activity that relaxes you such as painting or listening to music. There are also those who will choose unhealthy courses of action. For them alcohol use is the number one choice. Others may choose to use drugs, nicotine, overeat, or starve themselves. Some people choose yet another course of action called learned helplessness. This is when someone is faced with a situation that seems intolerable and they eventually give up. Their environment has ingrained in them that certain situations cannot be controlled or changed regardless if it can or not. The opposite would be the person with a hardy personality. They seem to have the most success with dealing with stress. This personality type has three distinct characteristics: commitment, challenge, and control. They usually throw themselves into whatever they are working on, they believe change is the norm in life rather than stability, and they give the perception that they can influence the events in their lives. Managing stress before it becomes too difficult to control is another aspect of coping. Having a healthy perspective of most situations will allow you to prioritize your life reducing the potential stressors. Also, having a realistic self image and reasonable expectations will allow you to set appropriate goals. The achievement of such goals will result in an uplift rather than a perceived failure. Once stress can be managed there can be a pursuit for happiness. Over the course of a life there will be times that are happier than others or not happy at all. In a study performed by Carol Ryff it was determined that happiness can be measured in six dimensions; prior studies did not include as many dimensions (1989). The dimensions described in her study would be self acceptance, positive relations with others, autonomy, environmental mastery, purpose in life, and personal growth. Her study surveyed 321 men and women of varying ages. Someone scoring high would possess a positive attitude toward themselves including their good and bad qualities. They would also show empathy towards others and understand the give and take of relationships. Autonomy is seen in someone who is independent and able to resist social pressures. Someone who has become an environmental master has a sense of competence in controlling external activities. Believing you have a purpose in life means you have goals and a sense of direction. Finally, having a feeling of continued development and openness to new experiences shows personal growth. Another study used the person-environment fit theory to compare work and family experiences to the personââ¬â¢s values and how they relate to stress and well-being. The idea behind the study was to see if the amount of supplies we value influences well-being when they increase and decrease. The dimensions looked at were autonomy, relationships, security, and segmentation. Person ââ¬â environment fit theory says that stress occurs when there is a perceived mismatch between the environment and a personââ¬â¢s goals, desires, and values (Edwards & Rothbard, 1999). Cognitive appraisal is directly incorporated into the concept of stress. Basically, person ââ¬â environment theory predicts well-being when there is a perceived match in environment and values. The opposite, or stress, occurs when there is a mismatch. The onset of stress will cause mental and physical strain and stimulate efforts to cope. There are three reasons why well being should be higher when autonomy supplies and values are both high rather than low. First, high autonomy supplies may consist of high supplies for responsibility and authority, in other words accomplishment and status, which many people value. Second, desiring and attaining high levels of autonomy possibly constitutes a supply for values pertaining to accomplishment and adjustment. Third, autonomy allows for freedom to allocate time and resources to meet lifeââ¬â¢s high demands. High control in addition to high demands gives people the ability to successfully cope with challenging situations, which leads to satisfaction and growth. The next dimension is relationships or personal connections with other people. People are naturally motivated to establish and maintain relationships. This is true at work and with family members. Relationships play such a dominant role in stress research because they provide social support that facilitates coping with stress and achieving well-being. When a person has a desire for strong connections with others it suggests they have achieved ambitious goals regarding social integration. The third dimension of well being is security, which is defined as ââ¬Å"the belief that membership in a role is stable and likely to continueâ⬠(Edwards & Rothbard, 1999). An example would be the feeling of job security or security within a marriage. Security is yet another basic human motive. Finally, the degree of separation or insulation there is between work and family is segmentation. Keeping your family stresses and work stresses separate requires an active effort on the part of the person. Managing boundaries between the two allows the person to inhibit the transfer of stressful experiences between the two. The study of mental and physical well being done by health psychologists and psychoneuroimmunolgists is still relatively new and is opening the door to many new career fields. The opportunities for careers in health psychology in this country are plentiful. Medical settings, especially medical centers, have expanded their employment opportunities for psychologists. In addition to medical centers, health psychologists often work in colleges and universities, medical schools, health maintenance organizations, rehabilitation centers, pain management centers, public health agencies, hospitals, and private consultation/practice offices [ (American Psychological Association: Health Psychology, 2011) ]. In addition to the specific skills that psychologists offer to patients and staff in the medical community, psychologists offer a unique perspective that assists other healthcare professionals make certain that health care is helpful and cost-effective. Health psychologists have focused on how lifeââ¬â¢s ups and downs can affect our mental and physical health. They have stirred professional and public interest in how biology, the environment, and our behaviors influence health and illness. Their studies have provided us with methods of coping and anaging stress so it is possible to maintain a healthy lifestyle. The more we learn about the relationship between biology, our environment, and behavior the better equipped we will be at preventing, diagnosing, and managing chronic illness. Parametric and Nonparametric Methods in Statistics
Parametric and Nonparametric Methods in Statistics There are a few divisions of topics in statistics. One division that quickly comes to mind is the differentiation between descriptive and inferential statistics. There are other ways that we can separate out the discipline of statistics. One of these ways is to classify statistical methods as either parametric or nonparametric. We will find out what the difference is between parametric methods and nonparametric methods.Ã The way that we will do this is to compare different instances of these types of methods. Parametric Methods Methods are classified by what we know about the population we are studying.Ã Parametric methods are typically the first methods studied in an introductory statistics course. The basic idea is that there is a set of fixed parameters that determine a probability model. Parametric methods are often those for which we know that the population is approximately normal, or we can approximate using a normal distribution after we invoke the central limit theorem.Ã There are two parameters for a normal distribution: the mean and the standard deviation. Ultimately the classification of a method as parametric depends upon the assumptions that are made about a population. A few parametric methods include: Confidence interval for a population mean, with known standard deviation.Confidence interval for a population mean, with unknown standard deviation.Confidence interval for a population variance.Confidence interval for the difference of two means, with unknown standard deviation. Nonparametric Methods To contrast with parametric methods, we will define nonparametric methods. These are statistical techniques for which we do not have to make any assumption of parameters for the population we are studying. Indeed, the methods do not have any dependence on the population of interest. The set of parameters is no longer fixed, and neither is the distribution that we use.Ã It is for this reason that nonparametric methods are also referred to as distribution-free methods. Nonparametric methods are growing in popularity and influence for a number of reasons. The main reason is that we are not constrained as much as when we use a parametric method.Ã We do not need to make as many assumptions about the population that we are working with as what we have to make with a parametric method. Many of these nonparametric methods are easy to apply and to understand. A few nonparametric methods include: Sign test for population meanBootstrapping techniquesU test for two independent meansSpearman correlation test Comparison There are multiple ways to use statistics to find a confidence interval about a mean.Ã A parametric method would involve the calculation of a margin of error with a formula, and the estimation of the population mean with a sample mean.Ã A nonparametric method to calculate a confidence mean would involve the use of bootstrapping. Why do we need both parametric and nonparametric methods for this type of problem? Many times parametric methods are more efficient than the corresponding nonparametric methods. Although this difference in efficiency is typically not that much of an issue, there are instances where we do need to consider which method is more efficient.

The Forum Romanum or Roman Forum in Ancient Rome
The Forum Romanum or Roman Forum in Ancient Rome The Roman Forum (Forum Romanum) began as a market place but became the economic, political, and religious hub, town square, and center of all Rome. Ridges connecting the Capitoline Hill with the Quirinal, and the Palatine with the Esquiline, enclosed the Forum Romanum. It is believed that before Romans built their city, the forum vicinity was a burial area (8-7th C. B.C.). Tradition and archaeological evidence support dating the building of certain structures (the Regia, Temple of Vesta, Shrine to Janus, Senate House, and prison) to before the Tarquin kings. After the fall of Rome, the area became a pasture. Archaeologists believe the establishment of the forum was the result of a deliberate and large-scale landfill project. Early monuments located there, whose remains have been found, including the carcer prison, an altar to Vulcan, the Lapis Niger, Temple of Vesta, and the Regia. Following the 4th century B.C. Gallic invasion, Romans vowed and later built a Temple of Concord. In 179 they built the Basilica Aemilia. After the death of Cicero and the nailing of his hands and head in the forum, the arch of Septimius Severus, various temples, columns, and basilicas were built and the ground paved. Cloaca Maxima - The Great Sewer of Rome The valley of the Roman forum was once a marsh with cattle paths. It would become the center of Rome only after drainage, filling, and building the great sewer or Cloaca Maxima. The Tiber floods and Lacus Curtius serve as reminders of its watery past. The 6th century Tarquin kings are held responsible for the creation of the great sewer system based on the Cloaca Maxima. In the Augustan Age, Agrippa (according to Dio) carried out repairs to it at private expense. Forum building continued into the Empire. The Name of the Forum Varro explains that the name of the Forum Romanum comes from the Latin verb conferrent, because people bring issues to court; conferrent is based on the Latin ferrent, referring to where people bring merchandise to sell. quo conferrent suas controversias, et quae vendere vellent quo ferrent, forum appellarunt (Varro, LL v.145) The forum is sometimes referred to as Forum Romanum. It is also (occasionally) called Forum Romanum vel (et) magnum. Lacus Curtius Almost in the center of the forum is the Lacus Curtius, which, despite the name, is not a lake (now). It is marked by remnants of an altar. Lacus Curtius is connected, in legend, with the Underworld. It was the site where a general might offer his life to appease the gods of the Underworld in order to save his country. Such an act of self-sacrifice was known as a devotio devotion. Incidentally, some think the gladiatorial games were another devotio, with the gladiators performing the self-sacrifices on behalf of the city of Rome or, later, the emperor (source: Ch. 4 Commodus: An Emperor at the Crossroads, by Olivier Hekster; Amsterdam: J.C. Gieben, 2002 BMCR Review). Shrine of Janus Geminus Janus the Twin or geminus was so called because as a god of doorways, beginnings, and ends, he was thought of as two-faced. Although we dont know where Janus temple was, Livy says it was in the lower Argiletum. It was the most important Janus cult site. Niger Lapis Niger Lapis is Latin for black stone. It marks the spot where, according to tradition, the first king, Romulus, was killed. The Niger Lapis is now surrounded by railings. There are grayish slabs in the pavement near the Arch of Severus. Beneath the paving stones is a tufa post with an ancient Latin inscription that has been partly cut off. Festus says the black stone in the Comitium marks off a place of burial. (Festus 184L - from Aichers Rome Alive). Political Core of the Republic In the forum was the Republican political core: the Senate House (Curia), Assembly (Comitium), and Speakers platform (Rostra). Varro says comitium is derived from the Latin coibant because Romans came together for meetings of the Comitia Centuriata and for trials. The comitium was a space in front of the senate that was designated by the augurs. There were 2 curiae, the one, the curiae veteres was where priests attended to religious matters, and the other, the curia hostilia, built by King Tullus Hostilius, where senators cared for human affairs. Varro attributes the name curia to the Latin for care for (curarent). The Imperial Senate House or Curia Julia is the best preserved forum building because it was converted into a Christian church in A.D. 630. Rostra The rostra was so named because the speakers platform had prows (Lat. rostra) affixed to it. It is thought the prows were attached to it following a naval victory in 338 B.C. [Vetera rostra refers to the 4th century B.C. rostra. Rostra Julii refers to the one Augustus built at the steps of his temple to Julius Caesar. The ships prows bedecking it came from the Battle at Actium.] Nearby was a platform for foreign ambassadors called the Graecostatis. Although the name suggests it was the place for Greeks to stand, it was not limited to Greek ambassadors. Temples, Altars, and the Center of Rome There were various other shrines and temples in the forum, including an Altar of Victory in the senate, a Temple of Concord, the imposing Temple of Castor and Pollux, and on the Capitoline, the Temple of Saturn, which was the site of the Republican Roman treasury, of which remnants from a late 4th C restoration remain. The center of Rome on the Capitoline side held the Mundus vault, the Milliarium Aureum (Golden Milestone), and the Umbilicus Romae (Navel of Rome). The vault was opened three-times per year, the 24 of August, 5 of November, and 8 of November. The Umbilicus is thought to be a round brick ruin between the Arch of Severus and the Rostra, and was first mentioned in A.D. 300. The Miliarium Aureum is a pile of stones in front of the Temple of Saturn set up by Augustus when he was appointed Commissioner of roads.
